Decorating a Girl's Room

I know when I was a girl I loved pink and I loved ballerinas and I don't think girls have changed that much. So the theme I've chosen for this girl's room is pink ballerinas. But I don't like to go overboard with the theme, just have a bit of an idea and build it out with other fabrics and accessories.

Taking a theme too far is risky because children grow up very quickly and themes can date very quickly. So I like to take in a small element of the theme and then build the room around that. I've chosen a pretty but simple ballerina-themed wallpaper. This can safely be applied to the whole room but I've chosen to do a feature wall behind the bed in the ballerina paper and then I would either wallpaper the other walls in a pink wallpaper or I would paint the other walls in a pink colour that would go with the ballerina drawing.

I sourced a pretty ballerina fabric which can be used on curtains or roman blind, and I'd recommend white plantation shutters over the bottom half of the windows and maybe use this fabric to make a roman blind or some short curtains on either side of the shutters. The shutters maintain privacy in the room when your girl is sleeping or studying.

In our chosen wallpaper we have a little heart motif. It's useful look at what motifs are in things like wallpapers because you can bring them out as an accent in similar fabrics.

I've found a little heart fabric which can be used for a bedspread or cushions. So now we have ballerinas and hearts to inspire us. I would then pick out some tones of the pink that occur in the ballet dancer, in her skirt and her tights, and use those colours for some little cushions on the bed. For a little chair or other piece of furniture I would choose a tough cotton woven fabric in that lovely rich pink colour.

I like to use carpets in bedrooms, they are lot warmer underfoot and children are always barefoot in their rooms. I would choose a velvet carpet which is nice and soft to the touch. I would choose a neutral colour with a hint of pink in it.

If possible put a bit of blackboard paint on the wall. Children love to write on walls and it gives her a place to be creative.
