An Edwardian Magician's Showcase

The core of the brief for this design project was to create an environment sympathetic to the display of an extensive collection of magician's paraphernalia without turning this home into a museum. The solution for the living room was found in an Edwardian inspired colour scheme with rich dark curtains. The Edwardian inspired colours were picked up again in the rug and chosen to compliment the hues already present in the framed poster collection.

An antique table lamp of the period was specified but the client eventually purchased their own reproduction piece.

As is often the case in boxy Victorian-built town-houses the basement is called upon to perform the function of a main room. In this case the basement became the "den", housing the audio visual entertainment systems. As with all such basements the problem is one of maximising light. Away from the formality of the Edwardian lounge we achieved this with the application of quite a vivid paint effect employing the yellow and orange that were the predominant colours in a collection of antique posters eventually to be hung there.

This effect was also continued up the stairs to lighten a narrow, claustrophobic entrance hall.
